Bringing fast, affordable broadband to Ghana with Project Link

When it comes to Internet access, a basic connection is useful— but it’s abundant, affordable broadband that can transform communities and help people make the most of opportunities online. Take the Research and Education Network of Uganda (RENU), which provides infrastructure to connect universities across the country. Using capacity provided by Google’s Project Link, RENU has been able to make its network faster, more reliable, and better equipped to enable the easy exchange of ideas, remote research, and academic collaboration.

Since we first announced Project Link in Uganda, our work with partners like RENU has shown us what's possible, and we want to see more. That’s why today, we are expanding Project Link to Ghana, our first country in West Africa, so that we can work with local Internet service providers (ISPs) and mobile network operators (MNOs) to bring fast, reliable broadband to more people across the continent.

While undersea cables reach the coasts, the challenge remains to bring abundant bandwidth closer to Internet users in Ghana’s largest cities—Project Link aims to fill this gap in local infrastructure. Across Accra, Tema, and Kumasi, Project Link will build more than 1,200 kilometers of fiber to connect local ISPs and MNOs to metro-area fiber networks. By giving them more speed and capacity to work with, providers can meet the growing bandwidth demands of Ghana’s mobile phone users, schools, and businesses.

Since we launched Project Link in Kampala, we’ve built over 700 kilometers of fiber across the city. Now, we are working with a dozen local ISPs and MNOs, such as Vodafone Uganda and One Solutions, to improve the quality of Internet access in Uganda’s capital. Providers have been able to expand new services, such as 4G, and deliver speeds that can support the best of the Web. Local startups like Fezah and Laboremus are taking advantage of these new offerings so that they can use the latest technologies to scale.

In Ghana, we’ll be building in multiple cities at once for the first time, with plans to grow the network to nearly twice the size of our first network in Kampala. We’ve already started construction in Accra, with Kumasi to follow soon, and we plan to start service in early 2016. There’s a lot of work ahead, but we look forward to working with local providers to ensure that Ghana’s local infrastructure can help its people and businesses participate fully on the Web and be inspired by what they can do online.
