Web Rangers in Africa: Promoting Online Safety

Helping to keep you stay safe online is one of our top priorities. We develop tools and features to keep you safe and secure on the web, and we work with partners to help inform communities of digital citizens.

Today, for the International Safer Internet Day, we’re hoping to raise awareness in Africa about online safety.

In South Africa, we’re launching a program called Web Rangers. Originally launched in Israel, and expanded to the Philippines, India, Turkey, New Zealand, Japan, Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, the Czech Republic and Kenya, Web Rangers provides workshops run by local online safety experts to help train young people. These young online safety ‘ambassadors’ then run campaigns amongst their peers, schools and communities to raise awareness of online safety. Together with our partners - the Film and Publications Board, the Department of Telecommunications and Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) - we’re aiming to train 5,000 young people this year in three provinces - Gauteng, Western Cape and Eastern Cape.
Participants in South Africa join others from Kenya, Nigeria and Senegal in a live Google Hangouts session during Safer Internet Day, 2015

In Nigeria we’re also kickstarting a localised version of the Web Rangers program, in partnership with the Nigerian Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) and HomeVida at Queens College Yaba. In 2016 we’re aiming to train over 10,000 school pupils via face-to-face training sessions and an online portal; both being launched today.
In Kenya, where we launched Web Rangers in 2015, we’re expanding the program into 160 more schools during 2016. Together with the Ministries of Information & Communications Technology and Education, the Communications Authority, the Kenya Film Classification Board, the Kenya Scouts Association, schools and CODE-IP Trust, we’ve trained 1,300 students and teachers from 30 high schools so far. In the coming months, we will train an additional 1,800 teachers and 3,000 students. The students will train over 30,000 of their peers in the coming months.
And since it’s Safer Internet Day - our Security Checkup gives you a quick way to control the security settings for your Google Account. You can add a recovery phone number so we can get in touch if you’re ever locked out of your Google account, strengthen your password settings, see which devices are connected to your account, and more. Like last year, if you complete the Security Checkup by February 11th you’ll get 2GB of extra Google Drive storage. This storage can be used across Google Drive, Gmail, and Photos.
We hope you’ll take a few minutes to find out more about what you can do to protect yourself and your family, and help us all become more aware of how to stay safe online.
