Police have satisfied a warrant put out by the D.C. Superior Court - thanks to the arrest of a Maryland woman who is alleged to have used GoFundMe to profit off of the murder of a church worker from the nation's capital.
Friday's (December 29) bust came exactly nine months to the date that a page set up on the fundraising website by 30-year-old Arlene Petty, of Capitol Heights, generated its last dime with the help of Stephanie Goodloe's tragic story. Goodloe's name made news headlines in June of 2016 after her ex-boyfriend broke into her home on Kentucky Ave. in the Southeast side of town and shot her to death, only days after she filed for a restraining order against him. By the final day of that month, Petty had reportedly established a GoFundMe campaign on behalf of Goodloe's family.
The Goodloe page remained active for nine months, between Thursday, June 30, 2016 and Wednesday, March 29, 2017, before it was removed. An investigation done by the D.C. Police Department's Financial and Cyber Crimes Unit found that Petty had actually been withholding contributions from the family as opposed to aiding them with the relief received. She is now facing first-degree fraud charges as a result.
