Tragic Paul Lee, 65, was with his family on Clacton beach in Essex when it happened on Monday last week.
Shortly before 10.30am, Mr Lee decided to go for a swim in the water, but just 15 minutes later his daughter made the heartbreaking discovery.
Mr Lee was found unconscious and lying faced down in the water, Essex Live reports.
Emergency services, including an air ambulance, rushed to the scene in a desperate bid to save his life.
Sadly, despite all efforts, the Clacton man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Further details surrounding Mr Lee's death were disclosed at an inquest hearing held at Essex Coroners' Court in Chelmsford today (August 18).
Coroner's assistant, Marianne Robson, said: "On August 10, this gentleman went to Clacton beach with his family.
"He went swimming in the sea but, after 10 to 15 minutes, his daughter noticed he was laying face down in the water being brought in by the waves."
On August 14, at Colchester General Hospital, Dr John Chapman carried out a post-mortem examination on Mr Lee's body.
Dr Chapman came to the conclusion that Mr Lee died as a result of 1a, ischemic heart disease and 1b, coronary artery disease.
Senior coroner, Caroline Beasley-Murray said: "I would like some photos of where exactly on the beach it was.
"I believe it was east, which is the side of the pier where there have been some other fatalities.
"I will need to see the police statements and something from the family will be helpful.
"I know the Maritime Agency is involved in this so I will need a report from the Maritime Agency and Tendring District Council."
A full inquest date has been scheduled for November 17 this year.
