"You Will Never Be Forgotten" - Tributes Pour In As Today Marks One Month Since The Lekki Massacre

October 20, 2020 will forever go down as one of the darkest days in Nigerian history for it was the day peaceful protesters made up of youths were surrounded and shot at for hours by the Nigerian Army.

The #EndSARS protest was one that has been years in the making. Starting primarily online, following bouts of police brutality, especially that from the Special Anti Robbery Squad, the tag #EndSARS will trend for hours or days before dying out.

This year however was a turning point in Nigerian history when youths in states across the nation, starting from Lagos took to the streets to protest against police brutality and demanding an end to the incessant and radical killings of young Nigerians based solely on how they were dressed or for being wealthy.

Tuesday October 20, 2020 dawned like any other day, the protesters had taken to the streets just like the other days before. From as early as 5am, youths had taken to the Lekki Toll Gate which has served as a convergence point for the protest on the Island in Lagos.

By 12 noon, a 4pm curfew was announced by the State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, which given the population of Lagos State was an impossibility. The protesters at best decided to have a sit-in at the Toll Gate to show compliance with the curfew.

This iconic picture was taken at the toll gate before the shooting began

Nothing was out of the ordinary till it was noticed that the CCTV cameras at the toll booths were being pulled down. The army arrived at the toll gate some minutes before 7pm, the governor had just announced the extension of the curfew to 9pm that evening...but by 6:47pm the army had opened fire on youths waving the National flag in show of surrender.

Videos, images of carnage tore through the hearts of Nigerians as mangled bodies were broadcast live on Instagram, the tears of pinned down youths mingling with hoarse voices singing the National Anthem gunshots continued to rend the air is something that will never be forgotten.

It has been a month since this carnage now tagged The Lekki Massacre occurred, and no one has been brought to book, government officials continue to deny it happened, the Presidency has described it as a "hoax massacre" but the pain remains fresh in the hearts of Nigerians.

Nigerian youths have taken to social media to mourn the heroes lost on that fateful day.
