A move to impeach Donald Trump and remove him from office has moved a step closer after Republicans say they ‘would consider’ voting to unseat the President.
Two Republican members have become the first to say in public that they want Donald Trump removed from the White House before President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration on January 20, according to CNN.
Trump’s tenure as President is looking increasingly likely to be cut short after the Republican sources revealed they would consider voting to impeach Trump ‘if the articles of impeachment seem reasonable’. One source said ‘We experienced the attack; we don’t need long hearings on what happened’, following Wednesday’s shocking events at the Capitol building.
It comes as House speaker Nancy Pelosi and her team are considering kickstarting an impeachment process if vice president Mike Pence and the cabinet refuse to do so themselves.
Pelosi and her team held a meeting on Thursday night about whether to hold a quick impeachment vote, and the majority said they wanted to ‘move ahead’, according to sources.
Speaking to reporters last night Pelosi said: ‘This is urgent, this is an emergency of the highest magnitude. My phone has been exploding with ‘impeach, impeach, impeach’. It’s thought that the feeling among most top Democrats is that Trump ‘must be held accountable’ for his actions.
Talk of impeachment have come following Wednesday’s riots at the Capitol building. Five people lost their lives in the violent protests that many believe were incited by Trump himself.
A full democrat caucus will be held at 12pm local time (5pm UK), in which members will register their individual preference regarding impeaching Trump.
The move will only happen if Pence and the cabinet don’t invoke the 25th amendment. If this is the case, Democrats have discussed actioning a process that would allow them to bypass the committee proceedings and move articles of impeachment directly to the floor within two days.
If impeachment gathers enough support it won’t be possible to launch a formal impeachment inquiry like in 2019 as that process can take several months.
Instead, Democrats are exploring offering articles of impeachment through a privileged resolution. That would allow the chamber to skip hearing and an investigation so that members could move ahead with a vote to impeach Trump within two days.
If Trump were to be impeached, it’s possible the Senate could make it so he could never be elected to office again. That, however, still would require the support of two-thirds of the Senate for it to happen.
