A woman is dead after being shot during protests by pro-Donald Trump activists at the US Capitol building in Washington DC .
The unidentified woman had a flag tied around her neck when she was shot soon after being part of a mob that stormed the building.
The riots took place as Joe Biden was being certified as the next President of the United States.
The demonstrators were tonight being cleared by the security forces, including the FBI and there were earlier reports of the National Guard being involved.
Following the demonstrations, Biden said: ‘Our democracy is under unprecedented assault, unlike anything we’ve seen in modern times.
The Capitol building was locked down and police moved in with guns drawn as Vice President Mike Pence and lawmakers were evacuated to secure locations. National Guard troops were deployed and a citywide curfew called for shortly after dusk, as rioters continued to occupy the seat of Congress for hours.
I call on this mob to pull back and allow democracy to go forward,’ said the president-elect.
President Trump later tweeted: ‘These are the things and events that happen when a sacred landslide election victory is so unceremoniously & viciously stripped away from great patriots who have been badly & unfairly treated for so long. Go home with love & in peace. Remember this day forever!’
Twitter again added the warning: ‘This claim of election fraud is disputed, and this Tweet can’t be replied to, Retweeted, or liked due to a risk of violence.’
Reports of the shooting came as Senate majority leader Mitch Mcconnell told Fox News shots had been fired. NBC reported that one person was shot by a member of law enforcement.
Video footage shared on social media shows the victim close up on the floor of the building.
The person who shared it wrote: ‘A young woman was just shot in the neck right besides me in the Capitol Building.’ The circumstances around the shooting remain unclear, but sources say one person was taken to hospital. Video footage shows a woman being wheeled out on a stretcher.
